Investing in Life: It's Not Always About the Money

My wife and I recently welcomed the arrival of our third child, a son. This happy occasion, of course, is a big milestone for us (as we are now outnumbered). It also makes my everyday concerns seem less important, and I find myself taking stock in my life and reflecting on the bigger picture. While it's easy to focus on things like the news, politics, and stock market volatility in our everyday lives, it's also important to occasionally pause and reflect on what is truly important. I like to reflect on my life investments. I want to make sure the things I have invested my time and money in are truly important. I write a lot of articles about money and investing. This one I would like to write about five ways to invest in other areas of life.

  1. Invest in your physical and mental health. Get serious about eating healthy foods and find some kind of exercise that you like and can do regularly. Maintaining a strong body and calm temperament pays tremendous dividends later.

  2. Invest in your children and family. Turn off the TV, put away the phones, sit down for dinner together, or just go on a walk. Make time for those you love on a regular basis. You will be guaranteed countless returns on your contributions in the long-run.

  3. Invest in your church or other charitable organization. Give what you can in time, money, or assistance to those in need. Find causes and charities you are passionate about. It is better to give than to receive and through giving you will receive in ways money cannot buy. Giving to others is one of the most low-risk, high-reward investment opportunities available.

  4. Invest in your friendships. Reach out to friends and spend time with them. Invite friends to coffee, dinner, or a weekend camping trip. Friendships compound beautifully if you invest in them.

  5. Invest in new skills, hobbies, and lifelong learning. One of my favorite Warren Buffett quotes is, "The most important investment you can make is in yourself." Learn a new language, read interesting books, practice public speaking, or join a hiking club. Seek out things that make you feel more fulfilled or relaxed. Diversify your life with various activities, and you will always have a worthwhile, fulfilling pursuit.
While I am always here to help you with your portfolio investments to ensure you reach your financial goals, only you can guide and direct your life investments. I encourage you to take the needed moments to focus on the truly important areas of life. Missing out there would be a far more tragic loss than any market crash.

If you have any questions about investing or are wondering how you can get started, I would be happy to meet with you for a no-cost consultation. You can e-mail me at gleest@wtwealthmanagement.com or call (928) 225-2474.

WT Wealth Management is an SEC registered investment adviser, with in excess of $100 million in assets under management (AUM) with offices in Flagstaff, Scottsdale, Sedona and Tucson, AZ along with Jackson Hole, WY and Las Vegas, NV. WT Wealth Management is a manager of Separately Managed Accounts (SMAs). With SMAs, performance can vary widely from investor to investor as each portfolio is individually constructed and managed. Asset allocation weightings are determined based on a wide array of economic and market conditions the day the funds are invested. In an SMA, each investor may own individual Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), individual equities or mutual funds. As the manager we have the freedom and flexibility to tailor the portfolio to address an individual investor's personal risk tolerance and investment objectives – thus making the account “separate” and distinct from all others we manage. An investment with WT Wealth Management is not insured or guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) or any other government agency. Information offered is neither an offer to buy or sell securities nor should it be interpreted as personal financial advice. Always seek out the advice of a qualified investment professional before deciding to invest. Investing in stocks, bonds, mutual funds and ETFs carries certain specific risks and part or all of an account's value can be lost. In addition to the normal risks associated with investing, narrowly focused investments, investments in smaller companies, sector and/or thematic ETFs and investments in single countries typically exhibit higher volatility. International, Emerging Market and Frontier Market ETFs, mutual funds and individual securities may involve risk of capital loss from unfavorable fluctuations in currency values, from differences in generally accepted accounting principles or from economic or political instability that other nations experience. Individual bonds, bond mutual funds and bond ETFs will typically decrease in value as interest rates rise. A portion of a municipal bond fund's income may be subject to federal or state income taxes or the alternative minimum tax. Capital gains (short and long-term), if any, are subject to capital gains tax. Diversification and asset allocation may not protect against market risk or investment losses. At WT Wealth Management, we strongly suggest having a personal financial plan in place before making any investment decisions including understanding personal risk tolerance, having clearly outlined investment objectives and a clearly defined investment time horizon.
